Why is knitting grid paper not square?

Knitted stitches are wider than they are tall (usually in a 4:5 or 5:7 stitch-to-row ratio). Standard square graph paper causes knitted motifs to look squished or stretched when rendered in yarn. Knitting grid paper uses rectangular aspect ratios so drawn designs look identical to the final knitted fabric.
